Why Online and Not Live? Why We Moved to Digital to Better Serve Our Sellers

For decades, the “live” auction was the gold standard. We loved the energy of the crowd as much as anyone, but as technology evolved, we had to ask ourselves a difficult question: Is a physical event actually serving our sellers’ best interests?

The answer, more often than not, is no. While live auctions are a spectacle, online auctions are a strategy. From an auction company’s perspective, our primary goal is to maximize the value of your assets. Here is why we’ve pivoted to digital platforms to ensure our sellers get the best possible results.

1. Exponentially More “Feet on the Floor”

In a traditional live auction, we are limited by the number of people who can physically show up on a specific day, at a specific time, regardless of the weather or their work schedules. By moving online, we replace a local crowd of 100-200 with a global audience of thousands.

  • Targeted Marketing: We track exactly who is looking at your items and retarget them with digital ads.
  • No Travel Barriers: Online bidding removes every friction point between a bidder and your assets.

2. The Power of Time (and “The Bidding War”)

In a live setting, a bidder has about 30 seconds to make a decision. If they hesitate, the hammer falls. Online auctions usually span several days, creating a more lucrative environment for the seller:

  • The “Comfort” Factor: Bidders have time to arrange financing and feel confident in their bid, leading to higher offers.
  • Extended Bidding: Our platform uses “Soft Close” technology. If someone bids in the final moments, the clock resets for a few minutes, ensuring the price keeps climbing until the true market value is reached.

3. Selling Made Simple: The Ease for Our Sellers

One of the biggest reasons we’ve embraced the digital shift is how much easier and less stressful it makes the process for our seller. Traditional live auctions are a logistical mountain to climb.

  • Sell in Place: Often, we can sell the items exactly where they sit. This eliminates the risk and expense of moving heavy machinery, fragile antiques, or entire households to a central auction site.
  • Zero Weather Risk: A rainstorm on a Saturday morning used to be a seller’s worst nightmare. Now, the auction is open 24/7, rain or shine, in a climate-controlled digital environment.
  • Minimal Stress & Work: The seller has to do very minimal work for the auction. We handle the sorting, photography and cataloging, and taking care of winning bidders show with an organized, scheduled pickup.

A Closing Note: The Rhythm Still Matters

Don’t get us wrong—we haven’t lost our love for the chant. There is an undeniable magic in the air when an auctioneer takes the stand, the crowd goes silent, and the rapid-fire rhythm of the bid call begins. It’s an art form, a piece of heritage, and a skill we are incredibly proud to possess.

However, in today’s market, we view the live auction as a specialized tool rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. While they are becoming fewer and far between, there is still a time and place for them.

Even though we love the energy of a live crowd, our duty to you as a seller is to prioritize results over nostalgia. A live auction is a snapshot in time; an online auction is a marathon that ensures every interested party in the world has the window they need to participate. We still bring that same auctioneer’s passion to every digital listing, ensuring your assets are presented with the urgency and professionalism they deserve.
